Stately Castle of Partanna
Grifeo Castle is a medieval building located in the territory of the city of Partanna. The Castle was commissioned by the Grifeo family in the 14th century and belonged to it until 1890. It is one of the castles of the better preserved and home to the “Regional Museum of Prehistory of Belìce – Interpretation Center and territorial enhancement “. The central entrance to the courtyard leads to the reception room also called “Hall of Arms” or “Throne Room”. From the reception room you go down to the old ones stables of the castle from which it is possible to visit the garden, the cellars and the entirely excavated basements in the rock.
Archaeological Area of the Strait
The archaeological site of Contrada Stretto is composed of numerous moats dug in this area and dating back to the Neolithic era. Both single and collective tombs, ceramic deposits, traces of hearths and even two spears associated with animal bones have been found inside them. Among the most interesting elements there is a gallery carved into the rock probably used also for worship. The ceramics and the finds found inside the moats and in the tombs include a chronological arc that goes from the Neolithic to the Ancient Bronze Age.
Archaeological Park of Selinunte
Founded in the seventh century BC. C. by a group of colonists from Megara Hyblea is the largest archaeological park of Europe and preserves the colossal remains of the Greek colony of Selinunte. Discovered in the 16th century, it came to the light following numerous English excavations in the early nineteenth century. The archaeological area of Selinunte is formed by the Acropolis, the eastern hill, the plateau of Contrada Manuzza, the sanctuary of the Malaphoros and two necropolises.
Cretto of Burri
Work by Maestro Alberto from 1985. Burri applies to the Cretti family from the early seventies and reaches the pinnacle when he decides to create a huge shroud on the old town of Gibellina, destroyed by the earthquake in 1968. The Great Cretto of Gibellina becomes one of the largest, but also symbolic works of Land Art never realized. Burri’s project in its forms shows the size, the streets, the reliefs of the city.
Mouth of the Belìce River
The Belice River is a seasonal waterway, it was born in Piana of Albanesi, in the interior of Sicily and after a 77 km course it flows into the sea. The last stretch of the river enters the reserve following an almost straight path and then stretches parallel to the coast. This reserve extends between Marinella di Selinunte and the promontory of Porto Palo. The beach is one of the rare places in Sicily where the “Caretta caretta” depone turtle lays its eggs. On the sand dunes there are some species of arthropods such as the orthoptera Brachytrupes megacephalus and Ochrilidia sicula, the beetle big Pimelia and the beetle Geotrupes marginatus.
Cave di Cusa Archaeological Site
The quarries are located 3 km from Campobello of Mazara. Characterized by large cylindrical boulders scattered on the land or yet to be extracted (there are more than sixty) characterize this 1.8 km long quarry which extends from east to west along a ridge. The quarries were the first suppliers of material for the temples of the city of Selinunte and, more precisely, given the size of the blocks extracted, for the temple G. The stone it was extracted for more than 150 years, starting from the first half of the 6th century. B.C.
